Test 1: The fixture check (30 seconds)
Walk into your bathroom and look for:
- Chalky white crust around the showerhead face and faucet tips — that's limescale, hardness minerals left behind by evaporating water.
- Cloudy spots on shower glass that squeegee won't fix.
- A ring or white flakes in your kettle.
Visible scale on fixtures means the same minerals are depositing on your hair and skin every shower. That alone is a confident yes.
Test 2: The soap-bottle shake (2 minutes)
- Fill a clear bottle about one-third with tap water.
- Add ten drops of plain liquid soap (basic dish soap, not a "moisturizing" formula).
- Cap it and shake hard for ten seconds.
Soft water: tall, fluffy suds and clear water underneath. Hard water: thin, flat suds — or none — and cloudy, milky water. The minerals bind the soap before it can foam, which is exactly what happens to your shampoo.

What the number means
- 0–3 gpg (0–60 mg/L): soft — hardness isn't your issue.
- 3–7 gpg (60–120 mg/L): moderately hard — enough to dull hair and film skin over time.
- 7–10 gpg (120–180 mg/L): hard — lather, buildup, and dryness effects are in full swing.
- 10+ gpg (180+ mg/L): very hard — you'll see it on every fixture and feel it after every wash.
