Sudden dryness has a short suspect list. Most people check the first three and stop — but the fourth one hides in the shower, and it's the one nobody thinks to test.
Rule out the usual suspects first
- Heat. New flat iron, hotter dryer setting, more frequent styling? Heat damage is cumulative and shows up fast.
- Products. A new shampoo with stronger sulfates, or a "clarifying" formula used daily, can strip hair in a week.

- Your utility changed sources. Cities blend or switch supplies seasonally — reservoir in spring, groundwater in late summer. Groundwater is usually harder.
- Your pipes are aging. Older galvanized or iron pipes shed rust and fine sediment that ride the hot water straight to your scalp — abrasive, drying, and invisible until you filter them out.
- Your water heater is due. Sediment accumulates in tank heaters; past a point, every hot shower stirs it up.
